Flies from the “February Room” podcast-Episode 11, Horsing Around with David Alexander and a Bass Popper

A popper that ended up on the business end of a horse

In this installment of the February Room, musician David Alexander ( aka the Dirtball) recounts a harrowing tale of a horse mane mixup on the river.

David Alexander “wading” for the keg boat to arrive.

While we can’t argue with David Alexander’s recollection of events that occurred on the John Day River 20-some years ago, involving an errant backcast followed by a reel-rippin’ ride on a black stallion, it should be noted that the following was omitted from Dave’s recount. After the horse took the entire fly line and returned to pasture, the angler sheepishly hoofed it to the rancher’s door to explain the unbelievable circumstances which led to his fly becoming entangle in the horse’s mane. While the rancher was extremely upset, our protagonist thoroughly apologized and eventually convinced him that this was entirely accidental. After all, the horse came to water at the same time our fisherman was aiming for the opposite bank, and “Stormy” shared the blame. The rancher allowed our hero to retrieve his fly line and politely suggested that h never return to his property.
