Flies from “The February Room” podcast-Episode 6, Jenny West-“Alien Ant Farm”

Trout of the Bitterroot have an affinity for purple

The browns, ‘bows, and cutties of the Upper Bitterroot like their salmonflies big and juicy! The Alien Ant Farm is a triple-stacker of purple and black foam with an underbelly of furry foam. Adhere squares together with super glue, allow to dry, and cut into strips approx 1/8 in wide and 2 inches long (a foam cutter can expedite the process and create more uniform bodies, but I tend to taper the body with scissors.) I tie this bug on a #6 dry fly hook, as bigger hooks tend to really beat the fish up. Tie the foam down tightly just forward of the hook point, secure rubber legs, add a dab of super glue, and dub with orange. Repeat behind the hook eye and add a wing of gray/purple antron blended with tan EP fibers and a few strands of gold Kreelex. The Alien Ant Farm is easy to tie, very durable, floats like a cork, and lands with a “splat”!

Using a Sharpie to stripe the abdomen creates a very lifelike appearance.
