#3-Baja, Mexico

Mexico’s Baja Peninsula might just be the ideal DIY saltwater fishing destination. The beaches along the Sea of Cortez are easily accessible via vehicle, and the possibilities are endless for intrepid anglers looking to explore on their own.

However, hiring a guide for the first couple of days will greatly straighten the Baja learning curve. I highly recommend booking a day or two out of Cabo San Lucas and going offshore. Three words-Marlin on Fly!

Roosterfish are one of flyfishing’s Holy Grails, and for good reason. Until you’ve tried to catch these beautiful, elusive critters from the shore, you won’t fully understand the addiction. Even small roosters are a thrill, and shots at “grandes” in the 50 lb. class will leave you shaking on the beach.

Variety is the spice of life, and of saltwater fishing, and the bounty of species in Baja is practically endless. “Poor man’s tarpon” (ladyfish) abound and brutish jacks prowl the beaches and wait to pounce on baitfish patterns. Needlefish like to eat flies too!

Each day brings a new adventure and boundless fun in the sun. Baja sits atop the must-fish list for novice and veteran saltwater anglers alike!
